These words have inspired generations of believers. Reading them we are encouraged to hold in our open hands all the parts of us that are perishing. We willingly give up what we cannot keep. Our possessions, wealth, inheritances, talents, gifts, comforts and even our lives are an offering far too small in light of the marvelous gift of God’s salvation.

These words are made all the more powerful when we realize the their author gave his life trying to reach the Waorani people of Ecuador.

May we give up all the fleeting pleasures of this world. May we gain what we can neither earn nor lose.

Love, The Downing Family
