The spiritual umbilical cord of prayer and support
As we embark on this journey of understanding and deepening our connection to the mission field, let us first contemplate the profound, yet often unseen, bond that exists between you and the missionary you support. This bond, my dear friend, is nothing less than a spiritual umbilical cord, a lifeline of prayer and support that transcends physical distance and temporal constraints.
Consider for a moment the miracle of human gestation. A mother, through an unseen connection, provides all that her unborn child needs to grow and thrive. In a similar, yet infinitely more mysterious way, your prayers and support nourish and sustain those who have ventured into the mission field. The Apostle Paul, that great missionary of the early church, understood this intimately when he wrote to the Philippians, “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now” (Philippians 1:3-5, ESV).
This partnership, this spiritual umbilical cord, is not a one-way street. Just as you provide sustenance through your prayers and support, so too do you receive nourishment for your own soul. The stories of faith, perseverance, and God’s faithfulness that flow back to you from the mission field are like a transfusion of spiritual vitality, enriching your own walk with Christ.
The paradox of distance and intimacy
Here we encounter a beautiful paradox – the further your missionary travels from you geographically, the closer you may find yourself drawn to them spiritually. Distance, in the economy of God’s kingdom, does not diminish intimacy but often enhances it. As you lift your missionary up in prayer, as you eagerly await their updates, as you share in their joys and sorrows from afar, you may find that they occupy an increasingly central place in your heart and mind.
This paradox echoes the words of the Psalmist: “But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works” (Psalm 73:28, ESV). In drawing near to your missionary through prayer and support, you draw near to God Himself, for you participate in His great work of redemption and reconciliation.
Glimpsing the eternal through earthly connections
As we ponder this unseen bond, we begin to catch glimpses of something far greater – the eternal connection that binds all believers together in Christ. Your relationship with your missionary, transcending as it does the normal bounds of human interaction, offers a foretaste of the communion of saints, that great cloud of witnesses that surrounds us (Hebrews 12:1).
In supporting and connecting with a missionary, you participate in a relationship that will outlast this earthly life. You are investing in eternal friendships, in connections that will find their fullest expression in the new heaven and new earth. As Jesus promised, “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life” (Matthew 19:29, ESV).
This glimpse of the eternal should both comfort and challenge us. It comforts us with the assurance that our labors in prayer and support are not in vain, that they are contributing to a kingdom that will never end. But it also challenges us to deepen these connections, to invest more fully in these eternal relationships.
And so, dear reader, as we continue our journey beyond the veil, let us pause to consider: How might we strengthen this unseen bond? How can we make our prayers more fervent, our support more tangible, our connection more intimate? For in nurturing this relationship, we not only bless our missionary, but we also enrich our own spiritual lives and catch a glimpse of the glorious communion that awaits us in eternity.
