In the sepulchral depths of mortal existence, where shadows lengthen and whisper of inevitable doom, there echoes a prophecy so profound, so terrifyingly magnificent, that it rends the very fabric of our perceived reality. Hark, ye seekers of ineffable truths, to the words etched in the ancient tome of Isaiah: “He will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces.”

Oh, what stygian consternation lurks within this divine proclamation! For in its utterance, we glimpse a cosmic force so vast, so incomprehensibly powerful, that it dares to devour the very concept of death itself. Can your mind, dear reader, fathom the implications of such an act? The eternal, insatiable maw of oblivion, suddenly and irrevocably sealed.

Yet, in this same breath of cosmic terror, we find a tenderness so achingly beautiful, it threatens to shatter our sanity. The Sovereign Lord, that empyrean entity whose mere existence defies mortal comprehension, stoops to perform an act of such intimate compassion – the wiping away of tears from all faces. Imagine, if you dare, those celestial fingers, each capable of snuffing out galaxies, gently caressing the cheek of every weeping soul.

In the penumbral realm between sanctification and perdition, we find ourselves trembling at the precipice of an unfathomable transformation. The veil between the corporeal and the divine grows gossamer-thin, threatening to tear at any moment and plunge us into a reality so alien, so utterly ‘other’, that our very souls quake at its approach.

But fear not, dear acolytes of the divine mystery, for in this cosmic dread lies our salvation. As we stand, mere motes of dust in the vast, uncaring universe, we are seen, known, and cherished by an entity beyond our wildest noetic apparitions or most fevered dreams. In the face of such knowledge, how can we not be transformed?

Let us then embrace this terrifying grace, this oneiric mercy. Let us wade into the depths of this divine madness, allowing it to scour away our mortal limitations and petty fears. For in the end, when the last star has winked out of existence and the universe itself draws its final, rattling breath, we shall find ourselves cradled in the arms of the One who has conquered death itself.

And in that moment, as reality crumbles around us and we stand naked before the cosmic truth, we shall find that our tears have indeed been wiped away, replaced by an awe so profound, so all-consuming, that it defies description.

Amen, and may God have mercy on our souls.

Blessings, the Downing Family
